Eight and a half year ago I met my wife, on a tiny Island in the Caribbean Sea. That tiny Island was my home for many years, but it was her first visit. We were both working there as therapists at the time. It was inevitable that we would meet. A little less inevitable that we would end up here, all these years later, on our 5-year wedding anniversary with two beautiful daughters. This is the story of how we met. The story of how we met

The first time we saw each other was at a theater. A mutual friend was performing and one of my friends knew one of her friends, so after the performance we all ended up in a café at the harbor. She wasn’t really paying any attention to me. After a while the waitress came over to our table and asked for our orders. I asked a couple of questions and placed our order in Papiamentu, the local language of Curacao. That’s when she noticed me.

She looked at me, astonished, and said “how did you learn all that? I’ve been going to classes for two months and still can’t order a drink”. I shrugged and said, “well, don’t sweat it, you will get there”. My friend ratted me out of course and told her I grew up on the Island. I had her attention. And I didn’t mind at all.

In the weeks that followed we saw each other a few more times. My timeline is a bit muddled after all these years, but we went to the beach one day, she came over for Roti one evening, we partied at a billionaire’s yacht one night and she jumped in her car, when I texted her we were having drinks at a little Jazz bar downtown. There was something there and there was also nothing. Because we were both seeing other people.

But both of our relationships ended and somehow, one night, we ended up at a club dancing barefoot in the rain together. A year later she moved in and after two more years I asked her to marry me. Five years of marriage and two beautiful daughters later, here we are. In the busiest and most exhausting time of our life. But with so much to be grateful for. So much to cherish and so many blessings to count.

5 Year Wedding Anniversary is a Wooden Gift

The traditional gift for 5 years of marriage is wood and that is just perfect, because we have this tradition of me giving my wife a watch on very special occasions.
