20 weeks pregnant! It went by in the blink of an eye, the first part of my pregnancy, but I’m also very glad we “finally” reached this important mark. I am not immune to the parvovirus, so we had to make sure both Aya and I wouldn’t get the fifth disease, which caused some stress. And the 20 week ultrasound is always stressful, because you never know if they are going to find something that will affect your baby’s health.
The Ultrasound
It went amazing. Our baby girl looks 100% healthy. They couldn’t find any abnormalities: everything looked completely normal. The ultrasound technician poked my belly for a good half hour, which made me feel incredibly sore. But it was worth it. I am so relieved an grateful our baby girl is doing well! The relieve translated into me getting the flu – I guess my body finally gave in now that it knew everything was fine – which had me down & out for the better part of the week. But I am all good now and super excited about the next 20 weeks!
The Kicking
I didn’t feel Aya kick until I was 20 weeks pregnant. This baby girl, however, I felt for the first time when I was 14 weeks and 5 days pregnant! By the end of week 15 I felt her everyday, usually multiple times a day. It is a lovely reassurance!
The Nausea
With Aya I was nauseous my entire pregnancy. And it looks like baby girl number two isn’t going to give me a break either. Even though I’m not nauseous after every meal anymore, I still feel sick at least once a day. I’ve dealt with it last time and I am dealing with it again: it is annoying and a big discomfort, but I don’t care as long as I can hold a healthy baby girl in my arms at the end of the ride.
The Weight
I gained ten kilo’s (22 pounds) during my first pregnancy. I don’t remember ever “feeling fat”. But this time around I feel HUGE. I think it is because I feel so restricted when it comes to taking care of Aya. I am used to carrying her in the Ergobaby – which I can’t do anymore because it hurts too much. I am used to being able to goof around with her, carry her and be active, but because of the nausea and the fatigue I can’t be the mom I want to be. I imagined there would be guilt once the baby was here, but I didn’t realize the feeling guilty could start during pregnancy!
The Baby Names
With Aya we knew that, if we were blessed with a baby girl, we would call her Isaya – even before I got pregnant. But this time around we haven’t been able to agree on a name. I have one that I really love, but it looks like we need to do a bit more brainstorming when it comes to naming this baby girl.
The Shopping
We don’t really have to buy a lot of stuff, because we already have so much baby things. But, you know… I may have bought seven pairs of new shoes for our unborn child. They may or may not all be pink. Maybe I will do a little baby-outfit post soon, sharing some of my favorite brands and shops, for newborns.
The Updates
I am documenting my pregnancy for The Parent Voice, so if you want to stay updated, check out my latest posts here. The series I am writing for The Parent Voice is called “Baby Bellies on Bikes” and I talk about my checkups, birthing plan, maternity leave, breastfeeding and other pregnancy related subjects that may come up!
I will however do one more update on Columns by Kari as well. I will be sharing how, as a blogger and freelancer, I will prepare for maternity leave and what the posting schedule will be this summer. And if you want to stay updated on Aya, the baby belly and me, come say hi on Instagram!
